Comet golfers competed in the Logansport Sectional Friday afternoon and came in with an 8th place finish, with a score of 370, which was a season low. The Comet boys were led by 3 players who shot under 90, which was the first time this season that they accomplished that. Seniors, Max Sommers and Luke Graham, led the team with an 85 and 86 in their last career high school performances sporting the Comet colors. Freshmen, Owen Chapman, had a career low 89. Jace Rentschler shot a 110 and Gage Thomas shot a 121. The Logansport Berries fired a 298 to take 1st place followed by Twin Lakes with a 299. Local rival, Pioneer, fired a 330 to take 3rd place and secured the 3rd spot to advance to the Regional. Coach Rentschler commented after the round, “I would like to first thank my wife for allowing me to do what I love. She’s been a great support over the last 75 days. I would also like to thank Coach Nathan Foxworth. Nathan was an awesome addition to this team and it really showed in our scoring. We made major improvements with the boys. We cut over 40 strokes from last years performance in the Sectional. We couldn’t have done that without him. It’s bittersweet seeing my Seniors move on. Luke and Max were great students of the game, over the past couple years. I was glad to see them come out and put up respectable scores in their last career matches. It was truly a blessing to spend so many hours with them. The best is yet to come for them. I can’t say enough about Owen Chapman and his ability, in his first year, as a Freshman, to fire an 89 in the Sectional. I look forward to great things from him in the future. It was a disappointing day from the standpoint, had we had the support in the 4 and 5 spot, we would have easily finished in the top 5. We will work on that next season, tear some swings down, build them back up, and learn from this. Listen, it’s a lot of pressure for these guys with the galleries following them, all eyes on you when you’re teeing off. We will really focus on the mental side of the game as we approach next season…and of course our short game. I have no reason to believe, even with the loss of two star athletes, with our young guys coming up, why we can’t keep getting more and more competitive. We have the talent at Caston, Coach Fox and I have to bring that out of them. My hats off to Coach Rans and the Panthers. You know, we’re all a big family in golf. We grow very close with the kids we play against, so to see our neighbors advance, that’s a win in my book. We’re gonna take some time off and recover and then the boys will be all over the links this summer before we begin dialing in this fall. I’m glad the boys finished so well today. We saw a lot of good things out of the team today and I’m extremely proud of the young men they have become through the game of golf.”
