Last spring, the IHSAA approved girls' wrestling as a varsity sport in the state of Indiana as it is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. U.S News & World Report said this in March: "Girls’ wrestling has become the fastest-growing high school sport in the country, sanctioned by a surging number of states and bolstered by a movement of medal-winning female wrestlers, parents and the male-dominated ranks of coaches and administrators who saw it as a necessity and a matter of equality." So for the first official time, Lady Comet wrestlers will take to the mat on Saturday, November 16th, in the Sarah Hildebrandt Invitational at Penn High School in Mishawaka. Competition begins at 9am. The Comets have two sophomore wrestlers on this year's squad: Piper Roudebush and Emmeline Zabel. These two ladies have been working hard in the wrestling room since late October and are ready to compete against someone other than themselves on Saturday. Here's what first year head coach, Steve Maroney, had to say about the start of the inaugural season. "These girls started practice October 21. It’s been about four weeks now, and Emme and Piper have been doing an outstanding job. I'm really looking forward to this year season with these girls. They should do quite well." Following Saturday's invitational at Penn, the ladies will then join the boys' wrestling team on Thursday, November 23rd, in a dual meet at Wabash High School.
