The Caston Boys Golf Team competed Friday in the Logansport Sectional at Dykeman Golf Course. The Comets came in with a top 10 finish. Twin Lakes won the sectional with a 300 followed by Rochester with a 312, Logansport a 316, and Pioneer with a competitive 350. Comet golfers shot a 413, which wasn’t one of their best performances, but placed them in the top 10. Luke Graham led the Comets with his lowest career score of an 87. Max Sommers came in with a 99, Jace Rentschler a 110, Corbin Smith with a 117, and Gage Thomas a 124. Coach Rentschler commented after the match how excited he was for Luke Graham. “He’s came a long way this season from where he was last year. He can absolutely crush his driver off the tee. He’s such a good kid and a great leader on our team. I’m excited to see what he can do next year after he works hard in the off season. Luke and Max are going to be two very important pieces to our success next season and I’m excited for them to get the opportunity to lead us. We still have a lot of youth in Gage Thomas and Jace Rentschler. They will probably come back next season after a lot of hard work this summer/fall and be as good or better than our best scores this season. They are very motivated to play well. I was extremely proud of Senior Corbin Smith’s determination and dedication to our team this year. He couldn’t even hit a ball at our first practice so to see him hit a lot of great shots at the sectional and late in the season was great for him and me personally. He will remember this the rest of his life. Smith will go on to be very successful as he heads to Purdue. I have a lot of work to do this off season personally for the golf program. The boys and I plan to have a youth camp mid July to spark interest for the game. Once kids get involved playing, golf is about as good as it gets. You’re outside every day in nature and getting exercise doing what you love. Starting kids at a young age on proper fundamentals is critical to be successful later on as they move into high school. I happen to know those fundamentals well and we plan to build up a heck of a program at Caston. The current team will play and play more over the summer and I look forward to seeing a totally transformed team next spring.”
