The Caston Comet Men's Golf team defeated the Winamac Warriors Thursday night to end the regular season. Match play was the format and the Comets and Warriors tied 3 1/2 to 3 1/2 and Owen Chapman broke the tie in a playoff hole for the Comets. In stroke play, the Comets(175)easily beat the Warriors(198)on what was the Comets best stroke team score of the 2026 season. Owen Chapman shot a 42, followed by Gage Thomas and Drew Williams with personal best 44's, and Reed Sommers decided he would put up a personal best with a 45. Coach Rentschler commented after the match,"I've said it all year, this is a special group! We set a team goal of 180 in 2025 and did not hit it. That was tough because you know inside the guys have it in them. I've told the media constantly that this team has it in them and they did it tonight! It all came together, all the hard work and dedication! I'd love to take the credit, but I can't. I didn't swing the clubs and I didn't make the putts, but it sure feels good to finish the regular season in this fashion. Fox has done an amazing job with the guy's swings and has made major adjustments, and it is paying off. We are celebrating all night tonight on this win. It is huge for Caston golf, huge for the school, and just flat out awesome for these young men as we head into the post season. I feel like I won the Super Bowl! Gosh, to see their smiles and excitement...it really makes this job so much fun. Actually, it's not even a job to me. What's the ol' saying? You never work a day of your life if you are doing what you love! I love this game and I love these boys!" The Comets will face off in a 10-team invitational on Saturday at Honeywell in Wabash.
