Comets scored an 11th place finish at the Pioneer invite Saturday with a team score of a 424. Pioneer won the event on a school record 319. Dane Bowditch took the top spot for Pioneer with a 73. Despite the loss, it was an exciting day for Comet golfers as Bently Williams and Drew Douglass made their Varsity debuts for the Comets in this 18hole showdown. More exciting news was that Drew Williams(sophomore) led the Comets with a personal best 96. Drew Douglass shot his best 9hole round of the season with a 55 to card a 116. Other notable scores were Gage Thomas with a 108 and Jace Rentschler with a 104. Drew Williams chipped in twice on the day from greenside. Coach Rentschler commented after the match, "These guys played with a lot of heart today. They knew it was going to be tough round and stuck it out. I put 2 of these freshmen and a sophomore into this very high-pressure situation and I thought they handled it as well as you could. Sure, I would have liked to have seen some lower scores, but at the end of the day, we got better, we learned from it, and we had fun. I tell you, when Drew Williams chipped in on hole 9 at Pondview from the bottom tier, I thought the kid won the Super Bowl. Hands got thrown up in the air, it was awesome! Those are the moments that keep us golfers out there and coming back day after day. Drew and I always go back to the first lesson I gave him 15 months ago, watch video of his swing, and we marvel at the progress he has made. He is passionate about the game and that will bode well for him down the road. I was proud of them all." Comet golfers will spring back into action Monday night at Roundbarn and Tuesday at Chesapeake Run in North Judson.
