Caston Golf Hosts Annual Invite

By BOYS GOLF | Apr 18, 2026 4:28 PM

Caston hosted its annual golf invitational at Pond View on Saturday. 11 teams participated in the tournament. Rain, cold, and wind couldn't keep the great golf and great scoring away! Northwestern shot an unbelievable 307 to capture the trophy. The Pioneer Panthers fired a very nice 324 to come in 2nd place and were followed by the Cavaliers of Tri-County with a 352. The Comets fired a 380 which was good for 6th place and were edged out for 5th by 1 stroke by Clinton Central. Hudson Whaley of Northwestern was the medalist of the event with a (-3) 67. That was the lowest score seen at the Caston Invite in years. A truly amazing feat considering the blustery conditions. Reyes and Rans of Pioneer both fired 75's at the event. The Comets were led by another phenomenal performance by sophomore Owen Chapman with an 84. Gage Thomas fired a 95 which was a great continuation of the positive round he saw on Friday night. Reed Sommers brought in a 100 and Drew Williams brought in a 101 to round out the top 4 Comet scores. Coach Rentschler commented that a lot of teams are 4-5 rounds ahead of us playing so they have a slight edge but was confident the Comets will close that gap. "I couldn't be more proud of Owen. To have that kind of leadership out of a sophomore is pretty exciting for the program. He's relaxed, he's cool, he's calm, and he's collected during the rounds. GT(Gage Thomas) has improved so much over a season ago. He's energized and brings a great attitude to the team. Realistically, I believe we can trim about 15 strokes off our total on an average day and I truly believe we can break 360 which is our team goal in an 18-hole outing. The weather was tough today, but the donuts tasted great that the Comet Pride Club took care of for the 55 players and coaches. My hats off to Hudson from Northwestern. That was a treat to watch today. That is not normal golf in High School in those conditions. He will go somewhere with that game! You may see that kid on tv someday. I was very proud of Micah Rans and Ivan Reyes. The scores they shot today would have ran away with the title a couple years back. That just speaks to how the competition has gotten better year after year at this outing. I mean 30 kids out of 55 were under 100 today. That is awesome!" Comets will go to battle Tuesday night at Moss Creek vs. the Warriors of Winamac.
